Free Up Your C Drive: How to Move Bitwig Studio Packages to an External SSD!

Note: When performing the method introduced in this article, please proceed with caution as all actions are at your own risk.
Moving packages or changing settings may cause unexpected issues. I take no responsibility for any problems that arise, so please proceed carefully.

When using Bitwig Studio, project files, plugins, sample packs, and other data can take up a significant amount of space on your C drive.

In particular, the installation packages for Bitwig Studio consume more space than expected, so moving them to an external SSD can help free up space on your C drive.

This article will explain in detail the steps to move packages to an external SSD.

1. Check disk usage with Windirstat

First, use a tool called Windirstat to check which files and folders are occupying how much space on your C drive. This tool visually displays the files on your disk and makes it easy to see which files are taking up the most space.

How to use Windirstat:

  • To install Windirstat, download the installer from the official download page and install it.

  • Select the "C drive" and start the scan.

  • Once the scan is complete, the disk usage will be displayed graphically. Check how much space the Bitwig Studio installation package is taking up.

Typically, the Bitwig package is located at the following path:

C:\Users[Username]\AppData\Local\Bitwig Studio\installed-packages

2. Move the Bitwig Studio packages to an external SSD

If the Bitwig packages are taking up too much space on the C drive, moving them to an external SSD can solve the space issue.

Steps to move:

  • Create a new folder on the external SSD, for example, a folder named "E:\Bitwig Package."

  • Copy the "installed-packages" folder from the C drive to the external SSD.

3. Change the Bitwig Studio settings

After moving the packages to the external SSD, you need to change the settings in Bitwig Studio to recognize the new location.

Steps to change settings:

  • Open Bitwig Studio and go to the settings menu.

  • Select "Settings → Locations."

  • Change the installation location for downloaded packages. Specify the new path (e.g., E:\Bitwig Package).

4. Verify after changing settings

After changing the settings, it may take some time for Bitwig Studio to recognize the new package location.

Wait a bit, and then verify if the packages are being properly loaded by following these steps:

  • Open the "Package tab" in Bitwig Studio.

  • If the moved packages are listed, it means they have been successfully loaded.

5. Delete old packages

Even after moving the packages from the C drive, some old packages may remain.

In this case, delete the unnecessary packages to free up space on the C drive.

Summary

Moving Bitwig Studio packages to an external SSD can efficiently free up space on your C drive.

After changing the settings, make sure that Bitwig Studio correctly recognizes the new storage location.

By following these steps, you can improve performance and manage disk space more easily, but remember that the process is at your own risk.
